The 4-Hybrid Problem

So my buddy tells me his men’s club foursome is short a guy for the Saturday event. They need a fourth. He puts me in touch with the guy who runs the group.

He calls. Nice guy. Asks one question: “Can you hit a 4 hybrid?”

I have never hit a 4 hybrid. I have hit clubs on either side of it. Same swing, same fundamentals. More importantly, I know how to manage a golf course. When to lay up, when to attack, how to leave a good miss on the correct side of the pin, how to read a green, how to grind out a bogey when par is gone. Whatever it takes to get the ball in the hole.

“I haven’t hit a 4 hybrid specifically, but hand me one and we’ll figure it out. I’ll get the ball in the hole.”

A pause on the line.

“We’re really looking for a fourth with 4 hybrid experience.”

”…I can hit a 4 hybrid. Borrow one from the pro shop, bring me one yourself, I don’t care. Just hand it to me Saturday and watch.”

“It’s just that our last fourth really set the bar with his 4 hybrid.”

“Sir, the amount of time between you handing me a 4 hybrid and me having 4 hybrid experience is approximately four seconds.”

“Unfortunately we can only consider a fourth with prior 4 hybrid experience.”

I’ve had this exact conversation. Last week.

The club in question? Dynatrace.
